Orientation to Economic Development

This on site course offers a one-day overview to economic development specifically for local leaders such as elected officials, board members, business persons, and volunteers. The course highlights business location trends, discusses the benefits of regional and organizational partnerships, identifies the roles of different stakeholders in the economic development process, and emphasizes the importance of community strategic planning for economic development. It also outlines the four key economic development practices: business recruitment, new business development, business retention, and business expansion. The course is conducted with sponsorship of a local or regional economic development organization and with at least one statewide economic development agency such as a utility or state organization. It is scheduled and delivered as requested locally. The cost for delivering the course typically is defrayed in part by its sponsors. Registration fees for participants are therefore minimal, usually limited to a small fee to cover the cost of the working lunch.
