The U.S. Department of Labor issued new regulations for the Family and Medical Leave Act, effective January 16, 2009. 

Changes include:

• Military family leave regulations merged into FMLA regulations
• New FMLA postings and forms
• Changes in medical certification and recertification
• New deadlines for employee and employer notice
• Changes to the right to substitute vacation and personal leave
